A new PROJECT, Dan and Allison's "Tenacity" Dodger recover!
Dan and Allison want to recover their existing dodger frame. Why, it's starting to rot away... Some of the local canvas shops will take the project on, but some have told them that they would suggest removing the existing frame and start over, estimate for a new from scratch dodger here in Alameda in 2012 is a little over $5,000 from the top end supplier. The recover is over $2000 from an economy priced local shop.
We agreed that I would charge my time at a "very reasonable" rate because it is my first project like this and I get quite a bit value from the project too! and they would buy the materials... Materials are coming in close to $600.
Here is the boat a Catilina 42 MK II - TENACITY
Thought I would document the work involved...
3/28/2012 - Finally got the last of the materials ordered... I had a color matching issue between NAVY , CAPTAIN NAVY and MARINE BLUE... In the future I will wait to get the samples prior to ordering 10 yards of fabric... Oops!
Sold the NAVY on Ebay and only took a $35 hit so not as bad as it could have been, mistake did set us back a week on the project. The CAPTAIN NAVY just arrived!
So... Time to start:
We all agreed that the front wind screen part of the existing dodger design really needed some support on each side of the center roll-up window section. So we decided to add support braces to the front bow just outside the zipper lines...
We used salvage 1" dia SS tube. Had two 46 inch pieces and the required length was 23"... THAT NEVER HAPPENS... and new fittings from Perfectfit.com Fittings were $48 for 4 tube ends, 2 base hinges screw down to the deck and 2 top separating hinges clamp on to the existing 1" forward bow...
Prior to removing the existing cover for patterning, I fitted and installed the new braces. Note, after removing the canvas, I checked all the fitting fasteners, screws and bolts... A major worry I had is set to rest, all of them are NOT frozen. If we have to make adjustments, we will be able to.
Removed the old canvas and used it to pattern the top and "roughly" pattern the side and front windows... The original top was made in three parts, the front and top were all one piece and the two side windows were separate, we are going to change the design to more closely look like the the design that Pacific Crest Canvas put on HAJIME we may even change the aft bow by adding an offshore grab rain if Dan can get a decent price from a weld shop...
