Sew I got me a sewing machine and am learning to use it...
I saw somewhere on the web a photo/drawing of a simple enclosure for sailing vessel cockpit... Here is the sketch...
Hajime looks just like that.... Well not really, Hajime is a '78 Tartan37 hull # 82, and looks nothing like that, but I could see her dressed out in foul weather windows all around!
A month or sew ago I went over to Gina's at Sew Far Sew Good in Alameda, CA and Gina helped me make a "dog bone"... It's the piece of canvas/windows between the dodger and the bimini on Hajime. Gina's stick is really boat cushions and re-upholstery, chairs and the like but she was game to help me with the boat canvas project! Photos below...
By the way, bimini was like $500 delivered included stainless steel 7/8 tubing... Of course add $200 for non standard mounting on Hajime, nothing is standard! Bimini from canada: http://www.convertex.net
And dodger was around $4700 from Pacific Crest Canvas in Alameda, CA. Great job from John Monore!
But it was the cost of the dodger that drove me to the do-it-yourself enclosure...
Yes that's an aluminum arch on the stern of Hajime, that's another story!
Cost of dog bone:
Gina gets $10 an hour for her help and machine and work space... 10 hrs = $100
Canvas was 3 yards at $16.85 plus tax around $54
Vinyl was 3 yards at 7.50 around $25
Zippers were around $16 plus shipping about $20
Gina had some backing vinyl laying around and it was no cost...
Total: ~ $ 200
Sew, I got to thinking, half the cost was in materials and half in machine rental... Huh? Of course after one project I know everything about marine canvas so the teacher was discounted completely... (Gina is great! I should never discount her help.) But I am a stubborn son of an engineer!)
Sew, found a machine on Ebay, new Reliable 2000U -33 portable zig zag for $435 and set out to create an enclosure for the cockpit on Hajime.
The Reliable is not a bad machine, but now I understand some of the web feedback on industrial machines. This one came in and it difficult to loosen some of the screws, the bobbin winding spring was jamming so the bobbin would not wind... Lots of little alignment fit and finish stuff... Some screws too tight, the belt pylly too loose, etc. If you are not mechanically and willing to open her up and look under the hood, DON'T get a Reliable 2000U-33 zig zag sewing machine! Oh ya, no case, but has a handle, heavy sucker at 41 pounds.
Back to the project...
